Vacancies for Laboratory Clerkship at Harvard Medical School, Boston

Would you like to do a Scientific Clerkship at Harvard Medical School this Summer? Please read on.

The application process is divided into three phases in order to make it as fair and appropriate as possible.

The first phase will be the responsibility of the local Medical Students Associations; the second phase will depend on a jury with high scientific merit and recognized scientific experience; and the third phase will be conducted by Professor Tom Kirchhausen and/or Professor David Golan.

Phase 1:

In Phase 1, each Student's local committee will select the most appropriate candidates from its own Medical School.  This process will ensure fairness and suitability because the local committee knows best the academic and scientific context of the school.

In order to standardize the guidelines for selection among all of ANEM's Associates, the ranking of the local committee must consider the following parameters:

- Candidates's year in the curriculum;
- Candidate's letter of motivation/rationale;
- Candidate's extra-curricular activities;
- Candidate's scientific curriculum, which should be particularly valued:

- Articles published, with full citations of the articles (co-authors, title, journal) and their scientific role in the work;

 - Abstracts published, with full citations of the abstracts (co-authors, title, journal) and their scientific role in the work);

- Oral Communications in scientific meetings;

- Poster presentations in scientific meetings;

- Laboratory work;

- Experience in cell biology, biochemistry, biophysics and/or pharmacology;

- Participation in Scientific Exchanges.

The value attributed to the scientific curriculum of the candidate should be at least 50% in the overall selection process.

The Committee Members must ensure that their applicants have the ability to understand, speak and write fluently in English.

Since two candidates will be selected for the summer internships at Harvard Medical School, each ANEM's Associate should select up to two candidates to forward to the second phase of the selection process.

Phase 2:

In the second phase, the top four candidates will be selected from among the up to 14 candidates selected in phase 1.

This selection should be made by a jury with experience in evaluating scientific curricula.  Members of the jury should have recognized scientific merit and experience.  The evaluation should be based on criteria that will be agreed between the jury and ANEM before the start of this second phase.

Phase 3:

The 4 candidates chosen in the second phase will be submitted to a final selection through an interview conducted by Professor Tom Kirchhausen and/or Professor David Golan. At the conclusion of this phase, two candidates will be selected to participate in a Laboratory Clerkship at Harvard Medical School.

The HMS-Portugal Program will fully cover medical health insurance, cost of living for a minimum of 4 and maximum of 8 weeks and round trip transportation (including coach airfare) to Boston.

Regarding the timeline, the following deadlines will apply:

- Call: from 3rd March to 19th March

- Phase 1: from 20th March to 27th March
- Publication of the results of Phase 1: 28th May

- Phase 2: from 28th March to 11th April
- Publication of the results of Phase 2: 12th April

- Phase 3: from 16th to 18th April
- Publication of the results of Phase 3: 18th April

This Selection Guidelines and its timeline can be changed by ANEM along its course.  However, ANEM is obliged to communicate any of these changes to the candidates who remain in the selection process at the time.
